Admissions FAQ

Am I qualified to apply to your graduate program?

If interested, please submit your application and review our admissions criteria.

  • If your GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS scores are below our suggested thresholds, consider retaking the test.
  • Applications undergo holistic review, considering the online application, statement of purpose, official test scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and research experience as a comprehensive package.
  • If applying to our Ph.D. program post-MS, highlighting research experience through a recommendation letter can strengthen your application.

Are there any prerequisite courses for admission?

Ideally, you should have completed undergraduate coursework in single and multivariable calculus, along with calculus-based introductory probability and/or statistics. Moreover, proficiency in basic computer programming is also advantageous, as well as having knowledge of linear or matrix algebra.

What is the minimum GPA required for my undergraduate degree to apply?

For undergraduate degree applications, we require a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Do I need to submit my GRE scores with my application?

The GRE is optional if you have a degree from a US institution in a related major. Otherwise, it is required. We review applications as a whole, not just one factor. Including GRE scores, even when optional, can strengthen your application.

I would like to submit certificates of accomplishment, a resume, and other documents. Where should I send them?

You must submit all additional documents via the NC State Graduate School Online Application. Upload your Statement of Purpose in the “Personal Statement” section and other documents in the “Resume/CV” or “Other Documents” sections. Avoid sending hard copies to the OR Program or Graduate School.

Degrees FAQ

How long will it take to complete my degree?

Ideally, the MOR or MSOR program typically takes 1.5 to 2 years to complete. Conversely, pursuing a Ph.D. may span 4 to 5 years, contingent upon whether you hold a master’s degree.

Are the requirements and coursework for the MOR online and on-campus degrees the same?

Yes, the online classes have the same requirements as in-person sessions.

I would like to defer my admission to a future semester. How do I request a deferral?

You must submit all supplemental documents online through the NC State Graduate School Online

To defer admission, email operationsresearch@ncsu.edu with:

  • Your full name.
  • Your 9-digit NC State Student ID Number.
  • The program and semester to which you were admitted.
  • The semester you would like to defer to.
  • A detailed explanation for requesting a deferral. The OR Director and Graduate School must approve your deferral.

OR PRO TIP: You can defer admission for up to one year (two academic semesters)
